Biography

Rakesh Mohan is an economist and former Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India. He is one of India’s most senior policymakers and an expert on central banking, monetary policy infrastructure and urban affairs. He is the Vice Chairperson of Indian Institute of Human Settlements.

 

Most recently he was executive director at the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC, representing Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Bhutan. He was also Chairman for the National Transport Development Policy Committee for the Government of India with the rank of Minister of State.

 

As deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India Dr Mohan was in charge of monetary policy, financial markets, economic research and statistics.

 

Dr Rakesh Mohan has also represented India at a variety of international forums including Basel and the G20.

 

Dr Mohan is Senior Fellow at the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs at Yale University and Distinguished Fellow at Brookings India. He is also a Senior Adviser to the McKinsey Global Institute and a Non-Resident Senior Research Fellow of Stanford Centre for International Development at Stanford University.

 

Dr Mohan has written extensively on urban economics, urban development and Indian economic policy reforms. His most recent book, ‘Growth with Financial Stability: Central Banking in an Emerging Market’, focuses on issues relating to the evolution of banking and finance the conduct of monetary policy, the management of the financial sector and the role of central banking in the Global Financial Crisis.

 

Dr Rakesh Mohan has a BSc from Imperial College, a BA from Yale University and a PhD from Princeton University.
