Jack Straw, UK Foreign Secretary 2001-06
“I didn’t want it. Brexit. But it’s happened. The most hazardous event facing Britain, of any since the last war. It’s reshaping British politics before our eyes – and causing enormous reverberations across Europe and the globe. A clear strategy is required, to keep access to the single market, and regain some control over migration from the EU to the UK. A tough call, but far from impossible. The key is to play it long and hard, identify shared interests, and build alliances. There’s plenty to work on – provided the UK does not ensnare itself by a premature triggering of Article 50. Interesting times!”
